The Victory Tower and Peace Tower are connected with each other through the column-road (western colonnade). The ceiling of the columns is ornamented with Turkish carpet motifs. These motifs have been painted by Tarık LEVENTOĞLU (1913-1978) by using fresco technique.
Just amidst the colonnades, there exists the symbolic sarcophagus of İsmet İNÖNÜ, Commander of the Western Front during the War of Independence, the first prime minister and the second president of the Republic of Türkiye, İsmet İNÖNÜ passed away on December 25, 1973. He was buried in the Mausoleum on December 28, 1973 by the decision of the Council of Ministers. Every year on December 25, his burial chamber and exhibition hall are opened to the public visit for two weeks and for one week after October 29 the Republic Day.
